What are my options?
SA VIrtual School offers three options to meet your needs.
SAVS Full Time
Students enrolled in the SAVS Full Time option undertake a full-time online international school course load at home. Students take from 4 to 6 subjects per year all of which are guided by experienced teachers. Grade 6 to 12 core subjects are mandatory, with electives making up the balance. Successful grades entitle a student to progress.
SAVS Part Time
Whether a student is looking to take one course or more, SAVS Part Time offers the flexibility many students need, with students having control over when and how learning takes place. A great option to supplement learning on subjects a student may be experiencing difficulty with or to take individual courses not offered by your local school.
SAVS Virtual Diploma Program
Students enrolled in the SAVS Virtual Diploma Program study online and earn credits towards an official American High School Diploma at the College Preparatory Level. The diploma is awarded by an Accredited American High School, with which we have an Online Educational Agreement.
The Southern African Virtual School provides students enrolled in this program with access to the online courses together with the monitoring, marking, grading and support services of our local certified teachers and staff. The American High School, in which the student is jointly enrolled, monitors each students progress and grades, provides guidance and counselling services to enrolled students and maintains the official student transcript record by recording all credits successfully acheived. On the achievement of all of the required high school credits, an official transcript is available and an official American High School Diploma at the College Preparatory Level is awarded.
The SAVS Virtual Diploma Program is only available to Full Time Students
Thanks to rolling enrollment, students are able to start and finish courses, whether via the Full Time or Part Time Options, when it is most convenient, 365 days a year.

How do SAVS courses work?
Each SAVS course has a real, experienced teacher who guides you through the online coursework, which is broken down into modules. As you work through the modules, which often include live lessons, you do the work on your own time and can contact your teacher when required.
Course milestones are measured with online exams and discussion-based assessments with your teacher. Pace charts assist students to remain on track with course schedules. Once you complete the course, grades are made available to you. They then appear on your transcript just like all your other grades.
Your SAVS Counselor is available via phone and email from 8 a.m.to 4 p.m., Monday to Friday, to answer any general queries you may have. But you'll talk with him or her via phone at least once per month. This monthly call provides you and your parent/guardian with the opportunity to hear a progress report.
Success in the Online Environment
SAVS is committed to promoting 21st Century skills for students while learning academic content. We want our students to be lifelong learners and make effective and innovative use of their skills. At SAVS, learning and thinking skills are implemented into each course. These skills include critical thinking/problem solving, communication, creativity/innovation, information/media literacy and contextual learning.
Students who choose to participate in courses with SAVS need to examine their personal skills and aptitudes for taking a class online.
The following attributes will greatly contribute to a student's success:
Self-motivation - Students can direct their own learning environment and methods to fulfill course requirements and achieve individual academic success.
Independent learner - The online environment enables students to learn at their own pace, relieving the stress of feeling rushed or pressured and providing enjoyment in the learning process.
Computer literate - Although it is not necessary to have advanced computer skills, students should possess a working knowledge of electronic e-mail, the Internet, as well as basic keyboarding skills.
Time management - Students must be able to organize and plan their own best "time to learn." There is no one best time for everyone, but the key to learning is to make the time to learn.
Effective written communication skills - Students must use electronic e-mail and discussion forums to communicate with their peers as well as the instructors. The ability to write clearly to communicate ideas and assignments is essential. This method provides the learner with rapid feedback as well as a means to inform instructors of any concerns or problems that they may be experiencing.
Personal commitment - Because there are no bells that begin and end classes, students must have a strong desire to learn and achieve knowledge and skills via online courses. Making a commitment to learn in this manner is a very personal decision and requires a strong commitment to perform in order to achieve academic success.
Overall, the staff of SAVS believes that every individual who has the motivation and self-direction to take our courses will achieve success in our virtual environment. Meeting the needs of our individual students is our top priority.
Lastly, but not least, successful online students are students who decide for themselves that online learning is a choice that they want to make.
When is it in the best interest of a student to use SAVS, in addition to taking courses at their local high school?
Resolve scheduling conflicts at school or meet the needs of different schedule configurations.
Allow student flexibility in use of time to meet other school / family / work / sport commitments.
Courses offered by SAVS are not available at the student’s home school.
Student needs to supplement their knowledge in a particular subject.
Online may be a better-suited learning environment.
Student desires the experience of taking a distance education course.
Provides opportunity for student to complete course(s) at an accelerated pace.
Provides extended time to complete coursework for those students that need additional time.
